Migrant groups: get involved!

The team behind Radio 1812 invites you to take part in the next edition of the global 2007 audio event with the aim to involve more countries, radios, migrant organisations and concerned citizens all around the world in the celebrations of International Migrants Day on 18 December.

Why should you take part?

Radio is the most effective mean of communication known to humans as it provides access to the greater number of people in the world: you don’t need to read or write to listen to radio, you don’t need to speak English to listen or to make radio, you even often don’t need electricity to listen to the radio. It is an extraordinary tool to widen debates, increase participation and raise awareness. Radio stations are easy to set up and the radio spectrum is now endless, so the number of radio stations around the world is exploding and they cater to all audiences, global, local, community, online, a feast which TV and the Internet are still struggling to achieve to the same extent. Yet bringing the power of radio and the Internet together gives you access to the type of audiences that you could only dream of 10 years ago. The airwaves and the Internet, like air and water, are a public good.

So make sure that on 18th December 2007, you make the most of that public good by ensuring that your local or national stations, your organisation, your country join in the Radio 1812 and celebrate IMD along with the rest of the world.

How you can take part

• Get in touch with your local radios to get them on board telling them about this second global audio event. You can even organise your national small or large audio event by getting various radios to cover IMD (as Greece and Italy did), encouraging them to broadcast on the day and to share their material with the rest of the world by uploading it onto the Radio 1812 website.

• Ask them to rebroadcast programmes they will find on our website (www.radio1812.net) if they are unable to produce their own or simply if they want a bit of diversity in their programming

• Work with them or encourage them to produce a jingle in the local language for the day if they are unable to produce a full programme, or you can suggest that they broadcast one of our jingles that will be available in 5 languages (or they could translate those) and repeat broadcast throughout 18 December

• Ask them to read a list of IMD events taking place locally or nationally as parts of their news

• Remain available for interviews

• Provide voices for radios (migrant voices to speak about their experiences, returning migrants, community leaders, politicians, experts).

• Send us contact details of radio stations and organisations that could get involved in this event.

• Upload your own radio materials on migration on the Radio 1812 website if you have any so that radios around the world can use all or some parts of your programme

• Put the Radio 1812 logo/banner and link to us on your own website.

• Talk to others about Radio 1812 and get them on board to outreach to their own local or national radios

Radios: How can you get involved in Radio1812?

Radio 1812 cannot happen without you, so get involved and make sure you are part of the biggest radio event ever! The team behind Radio 1812 invites you to take part in this global audio event with the aim to involve more countries, radios, migrant organisations and concerned citizens all around the world in the celebrations for International Migrants Day on 18 December 2007.

Radios are central to the Radio 1812 global event and ways to get involved include:

• Take part in the International Migrants Day’s Radio 1812 Broadcast Event by producing and broadcasting a programme on migration on 18th December and then share it with the world by uploading it on to the Radio 1812 website. Recommended file format for upload to the site is: mp3, 32 bit, 44100HZ or you can send your files to radio1812@december18.net and we will upload them for you.

If you are a bit stuck on angles or ideas, why not check our thematic briefings on key areas of migration, issues that touch all communities and all migrants around the world. You might also want to invite migrants or other concerned citizens as well as politicians to your show, or go out and visit projects and interview the locals.

• Share any already existing audio content on migration that you already have by uploading it onto the Radio 1812’s website. Recommended file format for upload to the site is: mp3, 32 bit, 44100HZ or you can send your files to radio1812@december18.net and we will upload them for you.

• Rebroadcasting programmes. No time to produce a full programme for the 18 December? You want to enrich your programme on migration with some outside flavour? Why not download a programme from the Radio 1812 site and rebroadcast part or all of a programme? Or you can translate, adapt or rebroadcast one of our jingles (available in 5 languages) for this year’s event. Just make sure that you mention International Migrants Day and Radio 1812. For research purpose, we would appreciate if you contacted us at radio1812@december18.net if you rebroadcast a programme.

• Cover International Migrants Day events in your area or worldwide: events will take place around the world on 18th December and these might provide you with exciting and relevant content for a full programme or as a good piece for your 18th December news bulletin.

• Let us know! Whatever you do, please let us know in advance of what you are planning to do on 18 December at radio1812@december18.net so we can promote your participation to our global constituencies.

We need the following information from you: country, time and date of broadcast (if relevant), frequency (if relevant), URL (if relevant), contact name and email, short summary of programming.

• Contact us: Last but not least, Radio 1812’s staff is happy to give interviews although we prefer if organisations and individuals closer to you and your audience are your first port of call. The world wants to hear about what goes on where you are!

• Stay informed: Subscribe to one of our mailing lists to keep informed with all the bits and pieces you will need to know to be part of Radio 1812 this year. You can also register to our RSS feed if you want to keep up to date with all the news on migration.

Here is the script to the Radio 1812 jingle in English. Just like the jingles, you can use and adapt or translate those as you see fit for your audience. We just ask you to mention International Migrants Day and Radio1812.

18th of December was declared International Migrants Day by the United Nations. Last year, radio stations from around the world joined Radio1812, the global on-air and online event that celebrates the stories and experiences of migrants through broadcasting. Mailing lists

We strongly recommend that you register to one of our mailing lists where all logistic information on taking part in Radio 1812 will be posted. These lists are mostly active in the run up to December 18 and on the day.

Make sure that you receive the information you need at the time you need!

Lists are available in: English, French, Spanish, Italian and Dutch.

RSS feeds

What is RSS?

RSS stands generally for Really Simple Syndication and it is the ideal way to receive the content you want from the web - delivered to your desktop in an easily manageable way.

Any site that displays the RSS button will be able to provide a constantly updated source of news and information delivered to your PC via a piece of software called an aggregator, or an RSS Reader.

This reader will check your favourite websites several times a day for new content, meaning you do not have to spend time surfing the web looking for updates.

The RSS reader will display the headlines and a brief synopsis of anything new it finds on your pre-selected favourites – allowing you to decide whether to click through to the site and read the whole story.

Alternatively, some newer web browsers (Firefox or Safari) offer similar functionality already built-in which will detect whether the website you are viewing offers an RSS feed and will then let you create a constantly-updated list of links in your 'bookmarks' menu.

To download a dedicated news reader it is also possible to use a Web-based news reader. For example, My Yahoo! users can now add RSS feeds directly to their personal page. Other options can be obtained signing up to Bloglines or using Google Reader.

Using the RSS reader of your choice or by integrating the feed into your blog (or online personal journal), you can access the latest Radio 1812 news and audio files available to download in your favorite environment!

How do you get started using RSS?

There are several ways of receiving RSS feeds and the technology is moving forwards, adapting very quickly. One of the main methods is to download a program called a 'News Reader'.

There are several News Reader programs available for all platforms, many of which are free. Readers include RSS Reader, Sharp Reader, NewsGator and Feed Reader. You will be able to find many other readers via any internet search engines.

You need to ensure that you have your RSS reader installed to display the feed correctly on your computer. If you don’t have an RSS reader, clicking on the RSS button will merely display a page of code.

Get Radio 1812 RSS Feeds

Once you have installed an RSS Reader, you can add Radio 1812 RSS feeds by clicking on the orange RSS button , copy the URL (http://www.radio1812.net/rss.xml) from the address bar and then paste it in the appropriate field of your RSS Reader to instantly add Radio 1812 news and audio files to your RSS application. It's that simple!
