Uzma Shakir never planned to live in Canada. And when she found herself here it was a bit of a shock. But as you'll hear in this profile, when another women needed help, Uzma Shakir rose to the challenge. Now widely recognized as an authority on Canada's immigrant experience, Ms. Shakir was awarded the Atkinson Foundation’s Economic Justice Fellowship in Toronto on November 29th 2007, in recognition of her work on behalf of immigrants in the Greater Toronto Area. The award will support Uzma Shakir's writing and speaking on issues of social inclusion, and the future of multiculturalism in Canada. Radio Canada International's Carmel Kilkenny spoke with Uzma Shakir, and put together this profile.
